Interests

Nutrition, food sovereignty, fair food systems, agroecology, agroforestry and food growing within community food and/or market gardens.

Educational/training highlights

I am a Registered Associate Nutritionist, governed by the Association for Nutrition, and the voluntary regulator for Registered Nutritionists. I mention this because the title 'Nutritionist' is not protected by statute, unlike the titles of Registered Nutritionists and Registered Associate Nutritionists. To gain the above status, I've completed a BSc (Hons) in Nutrition, and my interest in nutrition and wider wellbeing lead me to a MSc in Nutrition and Behaviour. Further interests led me to learn more about nature's connection to our health and wellbeing, alongside wanting to have a deeper understanding of sustainable food production. This all led me to regenerative agriculture, agroecology and food growing. I've worked for the NHS within community paediatric health, food and nutrition writing, health research and food and farming education for healthcare professionals, which has allowed me to immerse myself in the varied world of nutrition and food. Key highlights have come from having the chance to connect, work with and learn from amazing growers across Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan, and across South Wales. I am currently on a summer traineeship at Asthall Manor kitchen garden in Oxfordshire, allowing me to build on my existing and learn commercial growing skills, and looking for further opportunities. Ultimately this tying together of my nutrition education and desire to grow, allows me to support the good food movement where everyone should and can access localised, sustainable, affordable and good quality food that nourishes and supports communities.

Why I joined EmGen

I joined Emergent Generation because it is a network of likeminded people, who are similar ages, or at similar stages to me on this journey, and who are doing something towards regenerative food systems.

How I can support other members

The first event that I attended left me feeling inspired by all the incredible people that were there who are all working towards a better future. Since then, the network has become a valued space to keep up to date with what is going on across the UK within the food and farming space. The regular newsletters and job or education opportunities are great as this information can be difficult to find independently. I would encourage all young people who are interested in food, nature and farming at any level to join the network.

My next steps

As a new entrant or trainee gardener, I'm in need of further trainee opportunities and mentoring within the industry.
