Membership FAQs
Who is your core audience?
The Emergent Generation network is wide and inclusive.
We currently have members from across the farming and food system. They come from rural and urban communities covering all four corners of the UK. We are starting to engage some young people overseas too.
Our community includes 18-35 yr-old young farmers, growers, land agents, agronomists, advisers, facilitators, project managers, contractors, educators, buyers, chefs, researchers, policy makers, campaigners, artists, students, entrepreneurs, the curious and many more!
We welcome participants from underrepresented backgrounds, people of colour, neuro diverse persons, and those who might have a long-standing illness, accessibility needs, disability, or infirmity (related to physical or mental health).
Many are taking their first or second career steps. All have an interest in agriculture, food and the environment, and want to make a difference.
How do I update my membership?
Please do tell us if you change your email address, location, job role or have new interests. You can update your membership details any time by contacting us by email at info@emergentgeneration.co.uk.
Having up to date information helps us to monitor our impact and deliver relevant events. When you sign up to an event we will, from time to time, cross check and update your details.
What Happens When Young Members Turn 36?
Although we are an organisation focussed on young people aged 18 to 35, we don't want members who have shaped our story and been part of our community feeling lost at 36! We also recognise the value of experience and wisdom, and the role of intergenerational knowledge exchange and mentoring.
So...if you are a Young Member who is turning 36 soon (we hope we have your correct year of birth), then don't panic! We automatically invite all older members to stay with us and join our ‘alumni network’ as Supporter Members.
We do, however, ask you to remove yourself from the WhatsApp group although if you still find the group really useful, stay on but limit your contribution, ensuring it stays a forum for young members. Supporters stay on our mailing list and receive our monthly newsletter updates.
Our events have a limited number of full-price supporter tickets reserved for alumni and some other over 35’s. Take advantage of them and pay forward, so that our funding can keep subsidising our target age group.
We know income is not linked to age so should purchasing a supporter ticket be a barrier for you to attend an event, get in touch and let us know how you would benefit from joining and what you could contribute. We always evaluate requests on a transparent case-by-case basis depending on funding.
We will also encourage you to donate from time-to-time if you still like what we do and want to help more young members access events.
Over the coming years you might like to offer help as a mentor or share development, career or business opportunities with our young folk.
As we aim to be youth led we do not usually invite over 35s to be on our steering group. If you want to help lead we do occasionally seek experienced Directors and Non-Executive Directors from within our community.
I am under 18 - can I join?
We can't accept under 18s at present, sorry. As we grow, we are also exploring how we can inspire and encourage those under 18. Get in touch if you would like to discuss an idea.
Membership For Over 35s & Stakeholders
If you are over 35 and you have never been a young member or are representing a partner organisation/stakeholder then you can sign up as a Supporter Member. Get in touch and we'll ask for some details.
Supporters are added to the mailing list and receive our monthly newsletter updates.
A small number of supporters are welcome at most of our events – you just pay a little more (paying backwards). We will also encourage you to donate from time-to-time if you like what we do and want to help more young members access events.
Over time you might like to offer help as a mentor or share development, career or business opportunities with our young folk.
I don't want to be a member any more:
If you would like us to remove you from our membership and delete your data contact us by email at info@emergentgeneration.co.uk.
''Great diverse mix of people. Nice to see so many like-minded people, with all different backgrounds, interests and experiences. There's more young people
doing this than I thought.''
