Our vision is a diverse and resilient food system fit for the future, one that nourishes people and the planet. We must be bold and do things differently, at scale and pace. We believe this transition should follow deep regenerative and agroecological principles.
THIS FOOD SYSTEM SHOULD:
Deliver affordable, culturally appropriate, and healthy food for all
Connect rural and urban communities
Be diverse and resilient
Build soil health
Target net zero and adapt to climate changes
Be equitable
Cultivate and be central to a thriving and enterprising economy
Enhance biodiversity, water ecosystems, and landscapes
Protect our cultural heritage
Minimise inputs and waste
Recycle nutrients
Reward farmers and growers, big and small
Provide opportunities for new entrants and young people
Be an enjoyable and attractive sector to work in
While regenerative and agroecological principles are at the heart of our vision, we also recognise the value of nature-friendly, organic, pasture-fed, permaculture, biodynamic, syntropic, conservation agriculture, holistic, and integrated farm management approaches. All have a role to play–diversity of solutions is invaluable.
The role of youth
To be successful, we must engage and nurture young people across rural and urban communities. By enabling, encouraging, and empowering them, we can help turn their passion for change into practice.
The next generation of practitioners and leaders will spearhead the transition to a diverse and resilient food system. Young people, the emergent generation, bring knowledge, skills, mindset, and innovation. They also offer fresh perspectives, hope, and energy.
The role of experience
Intergenerational exchange of accumulated wisdom, skills, and experience is crucial within farming and food. As mentors, older stakeholders can help navigate the complexities of modern thinking versus tradition. They can provide opportunities.
The transition to a more sustainable future has begun, driven by individuals and organisations with vision, passion, commitment, and knowledge. It is now time to scale this activity and centre youth voice.
