In working to build a food system that nourishes people and the planet, we aim to:
-
ENABLE young people to connect, share knowledge and skills, and access new resources and opportunities.
-
ENCOURAGE and inspire each other to engage with confidence.
-
EMPOWER our community to collaborate and be heard, and to lead activities that have positive impact.
We do this by:
- Involving our members in governance and day-to-day activities, building a viable, youth-led organisation.
- Growing and nurturing a diverse network.
- Organising a programme of activities to inspire, connect and build knowledge and skills.
- Curating a monthly newsletter packed with news, opportunities and insight.
- Creating social media and web content that shares stories and opportunities.
- Running a thriving WhatsApp community where members connect, ask questions and share information.
- Facilitating participation for members to help shape and lead Emergent Generation.
- Encouraging members to speak at and organise events.
- Fostering mentoring and intergenerational knowledge exchange.
- Collaborating with stakeholders on projects that benefit our members and the wider food system.
- Subsidising event access, our own and third-party, and bursary support.
Who we do this for:
Our community includes 18-35 yr-old young farmers, growers, land agents, agronomists, advisers, facilitators, project managers, contractors, educators, buyers, chefs, researchers, policymakers, campaigners, artists, students, entrepreneurs, the curious, and many more! We believe that everyone involved in farming and food, all the way from town to country, should have a seat at the table.
Our core audience is young people (aged 18-35) because we discovered a strong need for support within the sector amongst this age group. Many of our members are taking their first or second career steps.
As well, members say they appreciate the space to grow their confidence, especially in using their voice, and this sometimes doesn't happen when there is an abundance of older and more experienced people in the room.
We definitely recognise the value of experience and wisdom, and the role of intergenerational knowledge exchange and mentoring - so over 35's do get invited to get involved when appropriate too. As we grow, we are also exploring how we can inspire and encourage those under 18.
‘I always love coming to Em Gen events and find them so uplifting and energising. This was my third summer gathering and the first time I took part as a speaker in one of the sessions. I normally completely avoid public speaking but because of the community Em Gen has created I felt safe to present, and to use it as an opportunity to practice and develop my presentation skills.' - Summer Gathering Participant, 2025.
